Print it in three steps
- Type the recipient and sender details. Leave anything you do not need empty — empty fields simply print as a blank line.
- Press Print. Your browser opens the normal print dialog and only the cover sheet is printed, without the surrounding page.
- Choose US Letter, portrait, and "Fit to page" or 100% scale. Do not print double-sided.
If your printer adds its own header and footer, turn off "Headers and footers" in the browser print dialog — otherwise the URL prints across the top of the fax.
Why this layout prints cleanly on a fax machine
A fax transmits about 200 × 200 dots per inch in pure black and white. Grey boxes turn into speckle, thin decorative fonts break up, and coloured logos come out as smudges.
- One sans-serif typeface, no grey fills, no background art.
- Field labels in small caps with a rule underneath — legible even after two generations of copying.
- Generous margins so a machine that shifts the page slightly does not cut off the fax number.
- The message area stops well above the bottom edge, where many machines stamp their own transmission line — only the small FaxBolt line sits there, and you can switch it off.
No printer? Skip the paper entirely
If you are printing a cover sheet only to feed it into a fax machine, you can skip both. Download the PDF instead, upload it with your document, and send from the browser with FaxBolt — the recipient still gets a normal fax on their machine.
Frequently asked questions
What paper size should a fax cover sheet be?
US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) for the US and Canada. A4 also transmits, but the receiving machine may crop or shrink it. Always print portrait, single-sided.
Why does my printed cover sheet come out with the page URL on it?
That is your browser's print header. In the print dialog open "More settings" and untick "Headers and footers", then print again.
Can I print a stack of blank sheets and fill them in by hand?
Yes — tick "Blank version" before printing and you get a ruled empty form with the same labels. There is a dedicated blank fax cover sheet page too.
Does the cover sheet need a signature?
No. A cover sheet is a routing page, not a legal document. Sign the document behind it if a signature is required.
